Enterprise resource planning ERP takes care about the various processes that are essential to running a business, including inventory and order management, accounting, human resources, customer relationship management (CRM), and beyond. At its most basic level, ERP software integrates these various functions into one complete system to streamline processes and information across the entire organization.

The central feature of all ERP systems is a shared database that supports multiple functions used by different business units. In practice, this means that employees in different divisions—for example, accounting and sales—can rely on the same information for their specific needs.

ERP software development also offers some degree of synchronized reporting and automation. Instead of forcing employees to maintain separate databases and spreadsheets that have to be manually merged to generate reports, some ERP solutions allow staff to pull reports from one system. For instance, with sales orders automatically flowing into the financial system without any manual re-keying, the order management department can process orders more quickly and accurately, and the finance department can close the books faster. Other common ERP features include a portal or dashboard to enable employees to quickly understand the business' performance on key metrics.

Today, ERP software products has expanded to encompass business intelligence (BI) while also handling "front-office" functions such as sales force automation (SFA), marketing automation and E-commerce. With these product advancements and the success stories coming out of these systems, companies in a broad range of industries—from wholesale distribution to E-commerce—use ERP solutions.

When you add up these advantages, the value of ERP—particularly cloud ERP—is clear. With an ERP solution, employees have access to accurate information that enables them to make better decisions faster. Not only that, but ERP software helps to eliminate redundant processes and systems, dramatically lowering the cost of doing business overall.

  • It’ll improve the efficiency of your HR team

One of the most immediate benefits of using specialist HR software – once you’ve completed the implementation and launch phase – is an improvement in the efficiency of your HR team. Repetitive, admin-intensive tasks such as chasing managers to complete probation or annual reviews can be automated, and others – such as approving holiday or certifying absence – can be delegated to managers and employees through self-service functionality.

  • It’ll improve your employee experience

Rapid advancements in consumer technology means workers expect even more from the digital devices and services their employers provide. If you’re used to using your mobile for everything from booking an Uber to order a new outfit, you’d expect to be able to do the same for booking holiday or viewing your benefits – and certainly not have to send a form to HR, for example.

User-friendly, well-designed HR software can help to transform your employees’ perceptions of your HR department, from regarding it as an outdated or ‘behind-the-times’ function to seeing it as one that is forward-thinking, and a strategically relevant enabler of good work.

  • It’ll save you money – or enable you to redeploy staff on other projects

Implementing HR software will of course involve one-off setup fees and, if using a cloud-based system, annual subscription costs. But, in the medium and long-term, your organisation should find that the efficiencies the software brings and time it saves will either allow you to reduce staffing costs or allow you to redeploy your HR team on more strategic projects. Better data accuracy should mean you experience fewer costly errors, too.

  • It’ll help you make better decisions

One of the most common frustrations associated with keeping people data in disparate sources, or in unsophisticated HR systems, is an inability to frequently, automatically and accurately report on key people management metrics.

Good HR software should make it easy for you to find, analyse and report on the people data that matters most to each function in your organisation – enabling you, managers and senior stakeholders to make smarter, more timely decisions. Being able to provide evidence quickly and easy for your ideas and initiatives will also help to cement the credibility of HR with the wider organisation.

  • It’ll improve your regulatory compliance

Because you’ll store all your people's data and related information in one place and be able to send automated reminders when action needs to be taken, your compliance with regulatory requirements will be much improved. Specific compliance areas where HR solutions can play a significant role include GDPR compliance (especially around data security and data-retention periods), right-to-work checks, and health and safety training compliance. You’ll also find that HR software will help you report on gender pay gaps, too.

Choosing the right software development company for your product is like hiring a crew to build your new house. Triple check the contractor with whom you will work with over the next few months, or sometimes even years, and more importantly, may decide on your success or failure.

Quotes – Reject the cheapest

It’s like buying products on eBay or Amazon – each time when you buy the cheapest iPhone cable, it’s broken after a week or two.

The same with buying services.

If you choose the cheapest offer, you will ultimately pay more at the end of the project.

Why?

There are a few reasons:

  • Technological debt – Poorly written code, lack of tests, difficult to work on or maintain, lack of documentation.
  • Source code ownership – You don’t own the source code; you will get only a bundled code or the company will offer you to license the product, despite you paying for the development.
  • Poor communication – Lack of experience of the offshoring/nearshoring team, poor English level, lack of transparency in the development process.

You don’t want to buy the cheapest service, but the most cost-effective. If you focus on spending less money initially, you will pay 2-3x times more in the future (the worst-case scenario – rewrite the app from scratch).

Integration and communication

Find a company that puts pressure on constantly improving the development process and values retrospective meetings.

It’ll be a faster and more cost-effective way to integrate your external development team from day one if they can clearly articulate what they expect from you and what you expect of them.

Based on a report from Accenture, communication and quality of service are more important than price for customers today.

Based on our experience, the most popular areas in IT to have similar processes are:

  • SCRUM/Agile development process – Nowadays, 80% of IT teams work in SCRUM. So, things like daily standups, sprints, and a similar definition of done are simply a must. Your outsourcing partner should have it.
  • Tools – It doesn’t matter what project management tool you use (Asana, Trello, Jira or even Taiga) – it helps if your partner uses them. More important is to understand your external team should be accessible; you should feel almost like you’re working in the same office – communicate with them daily on Slack or Mattermost during normal working hours.
Are using the word “No”

Avoid yes-sayers. You want to have a straightforward partner who is able to say ‘No’ if needed.

For example:

“No, you shouldn’t make this feature first – it’s a waste of money and your precious time.”

“No, we don’t work in RoR or Python or C# – we’re focused on JavaScript.”

“No, you should consider different tools…”

Technology stack

You want to have a focused software development partner. They should be experts in the technology in which they work.

To build a front-end in React, find a company working with React.

If you want to have a backend in Node.js, find a company working solely in Node.js on the backend.

If you see a software development company’s landing page has a ton of logos of different technologies, like RoR, PHP, Node.js or .Net – Don’t choose those guys. You cannot be an expert in 10 languages (maybe if you are a huge enterprise).

Partner chemistry

We strongly believe in relationship chemistry.

We work with our partners (yes, partners, not clients) as closely as possible, discussing the shape of the product.

Once there is chemistry and we are on the same page by having extensive transparent communication, the pitfalls can be avoided, and we can pursue our partner’s business success.

How to choose the best software development company in India– Checklist
General questions
  • How do you work? Tell me more about your process/approach to creating an application.

(Tip: Get a big picture of the approach.)

  • How do we communicate during a project to know the PPP (progress, plans, and problems)?

(Tip: There must be a mechanism/procedure that ensures you know what’s happening in the project. You must be updated at least on a bi-week basis. You NEED to know when things go wrong. Dig deeper using the next question.)

  • How do you ensure we know when things go wrong? Helper question: tell me how you handled a project in the past that went wrong.

(Tip: First, nobody wants to deliver bad news. Make sure they have a mechanism in place. Second, nobody’s perfect, so there must be a case that went wrong – listen to what they took out of it. Third: no one likes surprises – the best is to be prepared for the challenges.)

  • What do you expect from us and what should we expect from you during the cooperation?

(Tip: See what the roles are in the new-forming team. There’s no one way to set it up, but it is good to know what to expect. It’s great to know from the beginning what is the scope of responsibilities for each party.)

  • How do you try to deliver the product that will match our and our markets expectations?

(Tip: See how they work on figuring out what you really need.)

  • What collaboration tools do you use during the project?

(Tip: Tools are not that important; however, it’s great if they use something other than email to communicate fast and collaborate in a group (you + them + anyone interested in the project).

  • Will we use an instant communication system?

(Tip: It is great to communicate often and ask questions just around the time they appear.)

  • Will the developers assigned to my project work on any other project at the same time?

(Tip: It is way more efficient when a developer is committed to one project only.)

Technical questions
  • How do you ensure software quality? Do they use, for example, peer code review or automated tests?
  • Will I own the source code?

    (Tip: check the agreement.)

  • Do you work on technical documentation?
  • Could you provide me with profiles of the assigned developers?

(Tip: They will be analyzed – with no personal/contact data.)

  • Can I talk to the best-skilled person on your team?
  • Tell me how you will solve/build

(Tip: Give an example of a tricky part of your app and ask the potential software development partner how they will approach it.)

  • Could you share with me your best practices for writing the code?

(Tip: ex. we have it written down as a handbook and use an ESLint company file….)

Business questions
  • Why are you better than other software houses? What makes you special?

(Tip: ex. Sometimes, it could be a PM or QA or Senior/Architect Mentoring.)

  • How easy will it be to scale a team by 1/3/5 developers? How much time do you need?

(Tip: if you plan to scale the team, communicate it to the best software development company in Mumbai ASAP. Around 1-3 months should be enough to scale the team.)

  • What is your pricing per Man-Day? What does it include?

(Tip: ex. Sometimes, it could be a PM or QA or Senior/Architect Mentoring.)

  • Have you done any project similar to mine, regarding the Industry/Technology/Product Features?
  • Could you provide any testimonials/references from your previous clients?

(Tip: Check B2B Ratings & Reviews, have a Skype call with one of the customers, check Facebook Reviews or simply google it.)

  • What is your experience working with Startups/SMBs/Enterprises?

(Tip: Ask about the size of companies they worked with, ask to give you examples of projects.)

Inventory management software is used to track inventory levels, sales processes, orders, and deliveries. It can also be utilized to generate production-related documentation such as work orders and bill of materials. Companies make use of this system to avoid overstocking of products and outages. Inventory management software offers an improved way to organize inventory information compared to spreadsheets or paper. This solution resembles distribution software because it helps distributors spend less money on inventories, thus giving them an edge over competitors. Main features of this software include order processing software, asset tracking, service management, and product identification.

Service tax on service exports comes under the purview of the Export of Service Rules, 2005. Similar to the export of goods from India, services can also be exported without payment of service tax or duties. However, it is important to understand the Export of Service Rules, 2005 to judge if a service provided will be regarded as Export of service. If a service rendered is not judged as an export of service, then service tax is applicable.

Services that are deemed to be export of services are exempt from service tax. As per the Service Tax Rules, any service provided or agreed to be provided shall be treated as export of service if all of the below mentioned conditions are met:

  • The provider of service is located in India, except the State of Jammu & Kashmir.
  • The recipient of service is located outside India.
  • The service is not specified in the negative list of the service tax act.
  • The place of provision of the services is outside India.
  • The payment of service has been received by the provider in convertible foreign exchange.

The provider of service and recipient of service are not merely establishments of a distinct person.

The enormously talked about GST implementation has become a reality. The Goods and Service Tax, an unprecedented and revolutionary step in the Indian taxation system, is being proclaimed as the biggest tax reform in India. GST will add to the economic growth and bring simplicity to the way businesses operate by replacing existing Indirect taxes such as Excise, Value Added Tax (VAT), Service Tax, etc., into one taxation policy. However, for businesses to proceed to function smoothly, their ERP solution/ accounting software will have to be GST-ready. GST invoice billing software’s are rampant in the market and free GST billing software in excel are being used by individuals to file GST.

A GST ready software solution ought to have completely re-engineered the Tax Rule Engine, consolidating the new data.

Updating Master Data Information: GST has completely overhauled the taxation in India. Under the new arrangement, tax rates will vary in regard to the charge of tax, point of supply of goods and services and time of supply. In accordance with these changes, your GST reconciliation software should have all updated master records information such as Inventory, Warehouse Information, Customer’s Bill To and Ship To Addresses, etc.

Connecting new Reporting and Workflow systems. The GST-ready ERP system should have new robust workflow systems to effectively manage the consolidation of taxes and ensure timely submission.

GST billing software is a prerequisite for organizations to ensure that they’re following GST norms. Apart from the above GST compliances, businesses will benefit from a cloud-based ERP solution
